Bahamas, TCI told to keep watch as Tropical Storm Danny forms

FLORIDA, United States, August 26, 2009 - A tropical wave that forecasters were monitoring for the past day has now become Tropical Storm Danny, expected to dump rains on the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI).
After indicating as recently as 8 am this morning that the wave had a more than 50 per cent chance of developing into tropical storm within two days, the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami said at 11 am that the system had reached storm strength.
"Danny is expected to cause total rainfall of two to three inches with maximum amounts of four inches over the central and northwestern Bahamas. Storm total rainfall of one to two inches is expected over the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands," the NHC advisory said.

Danny is about 445 miles east of the Bahamas capital, Nassau and moving towards the west-northwest with maximum sustained winds near 45 miles per hour.
"Slow strengthening is possible during the next couple of days," the NHC said.
Of the four storms that formed since the 2009 Atlantic season began on June 1st, only one developed into a hurricane.
Hurricane Bill did not make landfall in the Caribbean, but passed close enough to Bermuda as a Category Two system last weekend to dump heavy rains and create massive waves that pounded the island's beaches.
