FORMER THREE-TIME Caribbean champion David Summerbell Jr of Jamaica and Guyana's national champion, Andrew King, will be vying for glory when The Williams Industries International Race Meet featuring Round 2 of the 2009 Seaboard Marine Caribbean Championship Series, comes off at the Bushy Park Racing Circuit on Sunday.

Summerbell, who leads the 2009 points standings with 30 points, was dominant during Round 1 at Dover Raceway in Jamaica in May. Driving his Mitsubishi Evolution VIII, Summerbell won all of his races but was closely followed by defending champion Stuart Maloney of Barbados who scored 22 points in his Automotive Art/Virgin Atlantic/Geest Lines/Simpson Motors/Sign Station sponsored Mitsubishi Evolution VI.

Joining Summerbell in the CMRC races will be newcomer Jaleel Handal in a works Subaru WRX, while ace motorcyclist Halquin Rodney will compete in the Unlimited CC Bike races.

Third place in the standing is held by another Barbadian, Mark Maloney, who in spite of his car still undergoing developmental changes, tallied 14 points with his Red Bull, Royal Bank of Canada, Digicel & Maloney Racing 20B Rotary Mazda RX3.

King, who drives a Tube Frame Mazda RX7, will be joined in the Seaboard Marine Championship Races by compatriot Kevin Jeffrey in a Mitsubishi Evolution VIII. Jeffrey, a former motorcycle champion, will be looking to establish dominance in the four-wheel form of the sport.

Speaking to Guyana's Stabroek News prior to shipping his car to Barbados, Jeffrey said that he expected an exciting meet at Bushy Park.

"I think we are like 85 per cent there right now because as you would know, we didn't do so well at the last meet, so we went back to the drawing board and did a lot of work on the car. Before we came here we were at the track doing our final run and I think we have some more work to do," Jeffery told the Stabroek.

"Even though we are at about 85 per cent, I don't want to say what I would do or anything because I'm going out there to do my best. Myself along with my crew, which is headed by Brian Ten-Pow, will arrive in Barbados next week Wednesday [tomorrow] and they will continue the work on the car there but I'm looking forward for a good run over there," he added.

Rounding out Team Guyana will be Gavin Gayadin in a BMW E318i, competing in Group 3B and Gavin Gouveia in a Turbocharged Toyota Starlet set to compete in Group 2B.

Guyana champion Stephen Vieira, on a Yamaha R6 and Maurice Meneze on a Suzuki GSXR, will both hope that their 600cc machines can do the job against local hero Brook Miller on his recently acquired Ducati 1098cc super bike.

With eight local entries to go with the three from overseas, the Unlimited Motorcycle races will be a major feature of the day's activities.

The Williams International is expected to give Barbados sports tourism programme a major boost as more that 100 visitors are expected to come in from Guyana and many more are due from other Caribbean territories. (BA/PR)
