Texas, United States, August 27, 2009:
Fraud accused Sir Allen Stanford has been hospitalized in the United States with an extremely high pulse rate and an irregular heart rhythm. The news came on the same day that his former chief financial officer (CFO) pleaded guilty to charges arising out of the investor's alleged US$8 billion fraud.
The 59-year-old Sir Allen had also been scheduled to appear in court today for a hearing on whether he can get a new attorney.
But his current attorney, Dick DeGuerin, said that at about 5:30 this morning, his client was taken from the privately run prison where he is being held in the Houston, Texas area to a hospital in nearby Conroe.
Sir Allen's former CFO James Davis, who has been cooperating with federal prosecutors, entered his guilty plea when he appeared in court this morning.
He faces a maximum of 30 years in prison on the conspiracy, fraud and obstruction charges.
It has not been a good week for Sir Allen, who was again denied bail by a federal appeals court on Monday.
