Barbados reports island's 1st death from swine flu

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados — Authorities in Barbados have announced the Caribbean country's first death from swine flu.

Dr. Joy St. John, the island's chief medical officer, says the patient was "an adult and had underlying medical conditions." St. John provided no further details at a news conference Tuesday.

So far, Barbados has recorded 96 cases of swine flu.

The World Health Organization says more than 300,000 cases of swine flu have been confirmed around the world. More than 3,900 people have died from the H1N1 virus.
