Trinidad’s PM under investigation

patrick-manning-swearingTrinidad's Director of Public Prosecutions and the police are to investigate an alleged deal between Prime Minister Patrick Manning and the leader of the radical Muslim group, Jamaat-al-Muslimeen.

High Court judge Rajendra Narine issued the order on Friday, based on what he called "the serious nature of allegations" contained in an affidavit filed by Jamaat leader Yasin Abu Bakr.

Mr. Bakr claims that he had an agreement with Prime Minister Manning to help him win a few marginal seats in the 2002 elections in exchange for state resources.

The affidavit also claims that Mr. Manning agreed not to pursue millions of dollars in damages awarded by the court for destruction of public buildings during the Jamaat's attempted coup in 1990.
