New Zealand Police have confirmed that the body of a girl recovered from a drainpipe is that of missing two-year-old girl Aisling Symes.
The girl's body was found last night, and was removed from the drain early this morning. She was found 36 metres downstream from a manhole cover in a drain which was buried 1.4 metres underground.
Inspector Gary Davey said that the drain had been searched several times by police on the night the girl disappeared.
He says they had shifted the manhole cover, climbed into the drain, shone torches into it and called for Aisling without response.
Inspector Davey says a post-mortem is currently being conducted held.
More than 150 people gathered near the property last night to show their support for the Symes family.
The two-year-old disappeared from her late grandmother's house while her parents were clearing the property last week.
The family's pastor, Russell Watts, says her parents are devastated.
