Contractor slain by 'job seeker'

In news out of Trinidad

The murder of 47-year-old Bhagan Gopee of Stuart Street, Gasparillo came as a surprise to workers who witnessed the killing of the innocent contractor.

Gopee was killed on the jobsite at Riverview Park, Longdenville around 7.30 a.m. on Saturday by a man claiming to be in search of employment.

Eyewitnesses to the murder claimed that the man took a luchette, a tool used to dig holes, and hit Gopee on his head, saying " If I cant get work here, nobody eh working."

Gopee was taken to Couva Medical Facility and later transferred to San Fernando General Hospital where he died three hours after the incident.

The Express learnt that Gopee was at the time building a house for a police officer when he was killed. The murder toll is now 433.

Relatives of Gopee had no comment to make on the incident when contacted yesterday. Chaguanas police have arrested a man for the crime and he is expected to appear in court on Monday.
