As Barbados celebrates their Independence Day Canada salutes their long standing relationship.
The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today congratulated the people of Barbados as they celebrate their country’s 43rd Independence Day.
“Canada salutes the people of Barbados as they mark their country’s independence,@ said Minister of State Kent. “Canada and Barbados have a long tradition of very close relations based on common values, people-to-people links and shared Commonwealth history.”
Canada set up its first Trade Commissioner Service office in Barbados in 1907, making it the first Caribbean country to establish a relationship with Canada.
“The two countries cooperate in a wide range of sectors, including migration, education and financial services,” said the Minister of State. “We look forward to continuing our strong relations.”
The Barbadian diaspora in Canada continues to make significant contributions to Canadian society at various levels, such as through Toronto’s renowned Caribana Festival. The festival has attracted thousands of tourists from around the world since its inception in 1967.
Canada remains committed to strengthening relations and future cooperation with Barbados.
