President Bharrat Jagdeo, who gave the police two weeks to complete a full investigation, had promised that the report would be made public.
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, November 27, 2009 - It won't be long now before the public gets to hear the findings of the inquiry into the allegations that police in Guyana set the genitals of a teenage murder suspect on fire.
The report could be released in a matter of days, Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon has revealed.
President Bharrat Jagdeo, who gave the police two weeks to complete a full investigation, had promised that the report would be made public.
Last week the Ministry of Home Affairs said the inquiry had been completed and the file lodged with the Police Complaints Authority and the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice on what action should be taken.
"The completion of this final round of activities is anticipated before the end of the week at which time the report will be formally handed over to President Jagdeo," Dr Luncheon said yesterday.
He added that on his return from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Trinidad next Monday, the President is expected to release the report.
The alleged torture of the 14-year-old boy, who was among a number of suspects being questioned at the Leonora Police Station, West Coast Demerara last month, sparked outrage among citizens, human rights groups and other organisations.
