By Gerry Hopkins, J.D.

Luni Sparks & Electrify Greanada’s 2007 and 2008 Soca Monarchs, Luni Spark and Electrify, have done it again, by winning in two categories –

(i) “Best Soca Duo or Group of the Year,” and

(ii) “Best Soca Collaboration Up-Tempo” with the song “Clear the Way -- in the 7th Annual International Soca Awards. These results, which are based on votes cast by soca fans throughout the world, were announced by the Soca Awards Organization, Inc., the host of the Annual International Soca Awards Show via an official press release on Sunday, November 15.

All of the results were issued on Sunday, despite the cancellation of this year’s show, which was scheduled for December 4 in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Island. According to the organizers, the cancellation of the show was as a result of “unforeseen circumstances.”

In the Best Soca Duo category Luni Spark and Electrify prevailed over 2Ntrigue, 3 Canal, and 3 Suns; while in the Soca Collaboration Up-Tempo department, their song “Clear the Way” surpassed “Superstar” by Beeni Man with Trini Jacobs, “Fly Away” by Ms. Alysha with Alison Hinds, and “Road Block” by Nadia Batson and Ms. Alysha.

The Grenadian artistes, now about to wind-up their North American tour and song-writing retreat, are certainly continuiung to distinguish themselves as the “energy kings of soca” who are well-poised to expand their talent into other genres of Caribbean music. Towards this end they have being having conversations with other veteran calypsonians and reggae artists Capleton and Coco Tea.
