St George’s, November 23, 2009 - A national policy for the erection of telecommunications towers across the country should be in place by the first quarter of 2010.
Dr. Spencer Thomas, who made the planned policy announcement, said some Grenadians have been expressing concerns about the telecommunications towers.
“We have received many complaints from residents about whether the towers are safe and what are the health implications and aesthetics and so on,’’ Dr. Thomas said. “We believe we need to look at a policy on how we erect towers in the future.’’
Dr. Thomas, who is chairman of the National Telecommunications Regulations Authority (NTRC)), said one suggestion already agreed to by Works Minister Hon. Joseph Gilbert is suspending the erection of new towers.
The moratorium will remain in place until a complete mapping of all existing towers is completed, he said.
Dr. Thomas added that greater collaboration involving key players, such as the Physical Planning Unit of the Ministry of Works, is needed in fashioning the proposed national policy on erecting telecommunications towers.
“The NTRC has to work together with the Physical Planning Unit and other ministries which have jurisdiction over the erection and management of the towers, and come up with a firm policy on telecommunications towers erection in the country,’’ he said.
