KINGSTON, Jamaica, December 4, 2009 - Police in Jamaica are trying to locate the mother of a newborn baby boy who was found in a landfill in the capital.

The child's body was discovered among the refuse around 10:30 on Wednesday as workers at the Riverton City dump were getting ready to compress garbage.

According to a release issued by the National Solid Waste Management Authority, under whose authority the landfill falls, the umbilical cord was still attached to the infant's body.

Inspector Everton King told the Jamaica Observer newspaper that he was confident there would be a breakthrough in the investigation very soon.

"The police will be asking around the communities and undoubtedly we will find some information as to who the mother of the child is," he said.

Lawmen have been appealing to the public for assistance in identifying and locating the woman.
