RESS RELEASE FROM THE OPPOSITION
Grenada New US Charge ’d Affaires Bernard E Link paid a courtesy call on the Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell on Wednesday last. The meeting which was very cordial and open discussed a number of issues ranging from the political and economic situation in Grenada, to the game of cricket.
In discussing the economic situation Grenada now faces, Chargé Link inquired as to whether there was a regional approach to the current crisis. Dr. Mitchell expressed the view that the islands of the region are very vulnerable at this time and will not be able to survive without an integrated approach to development. However he noted that challenges on the local front often get in the way of the regional objective.
In examining the domestic approach to the crisis, Dr. Mitchell raised concerns about the approach of the NDC administration to national development and noted that the hostility of the Government towards investors, himself, the NNP, other ordinary citizens, and the policies of the Government were only helping to worsen the situation.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mitchell also used the opportunity to assure the US representative that despite the Government’s refusal to observe October 25th as Thanksgiving Day, with the traditional National Service, the average Grenadian still sees this day as a historic one and is indeed grateful to the Government and people of the United States of America for the role they played in restoring Parliamentary Democracy and peace, following the bloody events of October 19th 1983.
Dr. Mitchell also reiterated his appreciation to the US Government for the support provided to the Government and people of Grenada over the years and he praised the former US Representative for the contributions she made during her assignment.
Chargé Link expressed his appreciation and noted that he intends to continue the work started by his predecessor Karen Jo Mc Isaac.
