Search called off for Grenadian and cousin in plane crash

Search called off NASSAU, Bahamas, December 28, 2009 - After covering more than 7,400 square miles for a Grenadian man and his cousin whose plane went down in the Bahamas, the United States Coast Guard has suspended its air and sea search.

Efforts to find Grenadian Bancroft Nyack, 30, and his 44-year-old cousin, Travis Compton of Miami Beach, Florida - both certified pilots - began on Christmas Eve when a Federal Aviation Administration controller reported losing radar and radio contact with their twin-engine plane about 10 miles northeast of Plana Cays in southern Bahamas.

Another pilot who was in the area reported hearing an aircraft's emergency distress call.

There has been no sign of either them or their plane since.

Compton, who owned the aircraft, and Nyack had left Fort Lauderdale and were headed to Grenada. Nyack had spent a week in South Florida and was going back home for Christmas.

They were expected to make two stops for refueling on the way to the Caribbean island, the first at Providenciales International Airport in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the other in Anguilla.
