Supporters of the NDC living in Toronto are making a contribution

St. George’s, December 4, 2009 – Supporters of the National Democratic Congress living in Toronto are making a contribution to the attempts of the Grenada Government to strengthen the nation’s food security mechanism. They are piloting a programme for the promulgation of various vegetable plants in the parish of St. Mark and in Carriacou.

Seeds of green and red peppers, cabbage, carrot, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, broccoli, cauliflower and okra have arrived in Grenada from the NDC Toronto Support Group for the launch of the programme.

“The initial idea for the programme was that of Richard Decoteau, a member of the group,’’ a representative of NDC Toronto said. “He suggested that we do something to help our farmers and the group agreed.’’

Aware that the NDC government has plans to spread its development efforts across the nation, the group selected St. Mark and Carriacou as the sites for piloting the seeds’ programme.

“We never forget Carriacou in anything we do, and we endorse the commitment of the NDC government to bring Carriacou into all aspects of national life,’’ the NDC Toronto spokesman said. “But while we are a party support group, we regard the seeds’ planting programme as a national effort which will be executed in a non-partisan manner.

A distribution of seeds to farmers will take place on Wednesday, December 9, 5:30 p.m., at Bonaire Government School in St. Mark.
