U.S. Coast Guard rescues alleged cruise ship jumper off Florida coast

RoyalCaribbeanMajesty The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued a crew member who allegedly jumped from a Royal Caribbean ship early today as it was sailing into Miami.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Barry Bena tells USA TODAY that one of the agency's response boats located 31-year-old Robert Mado treading water about five miles off the Florida coast at around 6:15 AM this morning -- about two hours after the agency first got a "man overboard" distress call from Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas.

"We pulled him out, and he was reported to be in okay condition," Bena says, adding that Mado was transferred to a fire rescue boat and then sent to a Miami area hospital for evaluation.

Bena says the Coast Guard doesn't know how Mado ended up in the water, but a spokeswoman for Royal Caribbean tells USA TODAY that he jumped.

Royal Caribbean issued a statement that says the incident was seen by others on board the vessel but otherwise offered few details.

"At approximately 4:30 a.m., crew members onboard Majesty of the Seas witnessed a crew member go overboard from the aft section of the ship," the statement says. "The ship's captain immediately turned the ship around, marked the position on the ship’s Global Positioning System (GPS) and alerted the Coast Guard."

The Majesty of the Seas was on a 4-night cruise to the Bahamas that departed Miami on Dec. 7 and was scheduled to end early today.
