FCB pledges US$1 million to rebuild Haiti

State-owned financial group, First Citizens yesterday announced their intention of pledging US$1 million to assist in rebuilding Haiti after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake destroyed homes, businesses and government buildings on January 12.

In a statement yesterday, the group explained that it made the decision to adopt its approach used in Grenada after Hurricane Ivan. “Having established that sustainability was a key factor in the Grenada initiative; our decision was to focus on the rebuilding phase,” First Citizen’s stated.

First Citizen’s intends on sending a team to Haiti within the next few months to assess the situation and explore these options. The team will then make recommendations to the Board for final approval.

The group’s response is not limited to their rebuilding pledge. The group explained in their release that the First Citizens Haiti Relief Fund Account, which was opened immediately after the natural disaster, has a balance of $345,000.

It has also facilitated the opening of several accounts for NGOs and other agencies which are collecting funds for Haitian relief. The group also supported the 20/20 match between Trinidad and Guyana at the Queen’s Park Oval proceeds from which will go into a special relief fund while staff of the First Citizens Group donated clothes, money and foodstuff via an internal collection drive.
