Counselors will be available this week at a northern Illinois school after a student was struck and killed by a van as she retrieved a cell phone dropped onto a busy street.
Police say 13-year-old Kristina Rodriguez was crossing the Lake Zurich roadway with a friend on Thursday when one of them dropped her phone.
Rodriguez ran back to pick it up and was hit by a Dodge van. She died of her injuries early Saturday.
No charges are expected against the vehicle's driver, who cooperated with authorities after the accident.
Rodriguez was a seventh-grader at Middle School North. Principal Mark Richter says she was a kind and soft-spoken girl who seemed to enjoy school.
Students are set to return to classes Monday after the winter break.
