ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Labour Commissioner Cyrus Griffith has intervened in a bid to cap a brewing rum factory dispute that threatens to spill over into the wider economy.
The Labour Commissioner has recommended the reinstatement of eight workers fired by the Grenada Distillers Company for refusing to sign personal contracts and has also called on the militant Technical and Allied Workers Union (TAWU) to end its industrial action at the company.
So far, TAWU appears open to the idea.
“We have indicated to the Labour Commissioner that we are ok with this,” said union spokesman Bert Patterson after the disputing parties met with labour officials in St. George’s on Thursday.
“If the company were to respond to the Labour Commissioner that they were ok with this position or the suggestion, we would immediately call off whatever industrial action is in place,” the Industrial Relations Officer added.
The union, which represents most utility workers in the country, including airport and sea port employees, has been picketing the company’s head office in south St. George and has threatened to bring economic life to a standstill if the workers are not rehired.
