Anti-Whaling Ship Damaged In Confrontation With Japanese Vessel

A month to the day after a similar incident resulting in the sinking of a ship, the crew of a Japanese whaling vessel has been accused of ramming a ship operated by an anti-whaling group.

Captain Paul Watson, the founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, said the group's ship Bob Barker was damaged when it collided Saturday with a harpoon boat accompanying the Japanese vessel Nisshin Maru.

Watson charged the Japanese ship "intentionally rammed" the ship about 180 miles off Cape Darnley in the Australian Antarctic Territory.

The collision left a gash about 3-feet 4-inches line on the right side of the ship above the waterline, the group reported on its website.

The harpoon boat, the Yushin Maru 3, moved away after the collision and appeared to slow down, the group reported, possibly indicating it also was damaged.
