Caricom rushes funds to Jamaica to prevent pullout of regional relief efforts in Haiti

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - The Caribbean's economic trade bloc is rushing more money to Jamaica after the government said it was withdrawing aid workers from Haiti because of dwindling resources.

It is unclear how much money Caricom made available. It had collected about US$1 million each from Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad, along with other funds from smaller Caribbean nations to help with aid and reconstruction.

Jamaica is overseeing some 150 Caribbean troops in Haiti and about 30 medical personnel from the region are helping at a field hospital.

Caricom spokesman Colin Granderson said Thursday that Jamaica bore the brunt of Caribbean relief efforts.

Jamaican officials told reporters the government has spent nearly US$450,000 with few contributions.
