EU Transport Ministers set Monday to Review Flight Ban

European transport ministers are set to review on Monday results of a series of test flights in which several major European airlines successfully flew jetliners through airspace fouled by volcanic ash.

The Spanish European Union presidency announced the special meeting Sunday.  Authorities say the ministers will analyze data from a series of flights conducted over Europe Saturday and Sunday, as the continent grapples with the effects of a paralyzing air traffic shutdown.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines said four planes flew in a normal pattern above 3,000 meters from Amsterdam to Dusseldorf on Sunday.  The airline said pilots did not encounter residue from the ash cloud covering northern Europe and said the jetliners were not damaged in any way.

Lufthansa flew 10 empty planes from Frankfurt to Munich Saturday without incident, and Air France flew two successful flights, and planned three more flights Sunday.
