Guyana, France to cooperate on security, environment

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Friday May 14, 2010 – Guyanese and French officials have met for their first formal bilateral meeting to discuss key issues of mutual interest, including regional cooperation, security, environmental protection and management and enhancing political dialogue.

Both parties have indicated a renewed interest in strengthening existing ties and exploring new areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad, who is performing the duties of Foreign Affairs Minister, headed Guyana’s delegation in the talks.

He said the collaboration between the two countries affords the opportunity for them to engage in activities that address the effects of natural disasters and the promotion of tourism, trade and transportation among the wider Caribbean.

Ambassador of France to Suriname and Guyana, Richard Barbeyron who led the French team, emphasised the need for both countries to cooperate against criminal activities, drug trafficking and protecting communities against environmental degradation.
