TT votes again

Trinidad Newsday

TODAY, for the second time in eight weeks, the citizens of this country will be going to the polls.

The first time was for a snap general election on May 24 which saw the government change hands from the People’s National Movement (PNM) to the People’s Partnership coalition.

Citizens across Trinidad will be casting their ballots in Local Government Elections which are being held for the first time in seven years. The last time local elections were held was on July 14, 2003.

On that occasion, 855,919 persons were eligible to vote and there were 126 electoral districts up for grabs. Those districts were spread among 14 municipal corporations. Prior to those elections, the PNM and the UNC each held seven corporations.

The Port-of-Spain, San Fernando, Point Fortin, San Juan/Laventille, Tunapuna/Piarco, Arima and Diego Martin Corporations were under PNM control. The UNC controlled the Chaguanas, Princes Town, Penal/Debe, Mayaro/Rio Claro, Couva/Tabaquite/ Talparo, Siparia and Sangre Grande Corporations. Seven years ago, the PNM retained its seven corporations and added Siparia and Sangre Grande to its list.

The PNM almost won the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation and districts in the Princes Town, Penal/Debe, Chaguanas and the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Corporations which it never had before.
