Mexican police kill 7 gunmen in shootout

TOLUCA, Mexico (AP) — Authorities say federal police agents have killed seven suspected drug cartel gunmen in a shootout in central Mexico.

Mexico state Attorney General Alfredo Castillo said yesterday that seven police officers were wounded as well in Wednesday's shootout with alleged members of the Familia Michoacana drug cartel.

The clash took place in the town of Luvianos in Mexico state near the border with Michoacan state, where the cartel is based.

La Familia has been spreading to nearby states and waging a turf battle with former allies since it burst onto the national scene in 2006. It declared its independence from the Gulf cartel by rolling five severed heads into a disco in the mountain city of Uruapan.
