Prime Minister of Ethiopia dead at 57

Prime Minister of  Ethiopia Meles Zenawi is dead.

Mr. Meles' death follows weeks of  speculation about his health.

He was admitted to hospital last month.

The nature of  his condition was not made public.

Speculation about his health began when he missed an African Union summit in Addis Ababa earlier last month.

There were reports that Mr Meles was in hospital in Belgium, suffering from a stomach complaint.

He took power as the leader of  a rebel group that ousted communist leader Mengistu Haile Mariam in 1991.

State television said Deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, who is also Ethiopia's foreign minister, will be acting head of  government.
