NEW YORK, September 24, 2009 – Grenada and Australia have agreed to hold a series of bi-lateral discussions to formulate concrete proposals in several areas of cooperation.
Prime Minister Tillman Thomas on Thursday met with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in New York where they discussed areas of cooperation between both countries.
Prime Minister Thomas discussed issues of scholarships, agriculture, climate change, assistance in modernizing Grenada’s land registry and the reconstruction of the Parliament building which was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The two leaders also discussed Australia’s new initiative in engaging the world community.
The Australian Prime Minister indicated a willingness to consider training in sports administration and a tax information exchange mechanism.
Prime Minister Thomas thanked his Australian counterpart for his country’s assistance to Grenada over the years and welcomed the idea of joint consultations.
The Grenadian Prime Minister also took the opportunity to invite Prime Minister Rudd to visit Grenada when he attends the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad in November.
Mr. Rudd welcomed the invitation and indicated his willingness to visit the island provided that his schedule permits.
The Prime Minister was accompanied to the meeting by Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David, Permanent Secretary Sibyl Alexander and Permanent Representative of Grenada to the United Nations Ambassador Dessima Williams.
