POLICE in Barbados WANTs the use of cellphones while driving to be outlawed, and have ma de such a proposal to Government.
"We are seeing too many people driving and using the cellphone, and it poses a danger to everyone," said Inspector Leon Blades, who has responsibility for operational matters of the Police Force.
Blades is part of a police team which has been meeting with officials of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to propose certain amendments to the Road Traffic Act.
Minister of Public Works and Transport John Boyce confirmed that his ministry was making final adjustments to road traffic regulations for "re-presentation", but would not comment specifically on the banning of cellphones for motorists.
"We are making sure we zero in on all these areas that would improve the safety of driving in Barbados, and indeed make life a little easier for the police service which has to enforce these laws once they are there," he said.
Boyce said there were on-going discussions between the relevant parties "to make sure the new amendments meet the objectives".
