CLEVELAND — The suspect in a potential serial murder case here, Anthony Sowell, was denied bond in his initial court appearance on Wednesday. Mr. Sowell, 50, faces five murder charges and one charge of rape, with more charges likely, the police said.
“After 26 years on this bench, this is by far the most serious set of allegations I’ve ever faced,” Ronald B. Adrine, a municipal court judge, said as he bound the case over to a county grand jury.
Ten bodies have been found inside Mr. Sowell’s house and buried in his yard in a low-income neighborhood on the east side of Cleveland. A human skull was found in a bucket in the basement. Investigators are unsure if the skull belongs to one of the bodies already discovered or is that of an additional victim, said Edward Tomba, Cleveland’s deputy police chief.
Mr. Sowell, a convicted sex offender, is likely to be charged with capital murder and face a potential death penalty, an assistant county prosecutor, Brian P. Murphy, said in court. “The state believes he is an incredibly dangerous threat to the public,” Mr. Murphy said in his request that Mr. Sowell be held in jail without bond.
