3-Car Bronx Crash Kills Woman and Leaves Tom Brokaw Unhurt

A woman was killed in a three-vehicle crash in the Bronx on Friday that also involved a car driven by Tom Brokaw, the former NBC news anchor, officials said.

Neither Mr. Brokaw nor his wife, Meredith, who were traveling in a 2006 Volvo station wagon, was injured in the crash at 12:57 p.m., which investigators believe was caused by debris along the northbound lanes of the Bruckner Expressway.

The dead woman, Suejas Estrada of the Bronx, was thrown through the driver’s side window of her 1998 Ford Expedition, the police said.

In a statement issued through NBC, Mr. Brokaw, 69, said that he was in the highway’s left lane when the Ford S.U.V. “came up fast,” trying to avoid a spool of cable bouncing in the right lane. The Expedition veered left, forcing a Postal Service truck in the center lane into the left lane ahead of Mr. Brokaw’s wagon.

The police said that the northbound Expedition hit the mail truck, which mounted a divider separating the northbound and southbound lanes and veered onto a shoulder.

The driver of the Postal Service truck, a 54-year-old man, was taken to Westchester Medical Center with bumps and bruises on his shoulder, the police said.
