A plane is due to land in Brazil at midnight to take home 33 Brazilian nationals who have been allegedly attacked in a deadly riot targeting foreigners in Suriname, the Embassy of Brazil in Suriname said Wednesday.
The Brazilian Air Force aircraft, Hercules C-130, left on Wednesday for Paramaribo, capital of Suriname, carrying onboard ICU equipment, two doctors, a nurse, and a social worker to deal with traumatized rape victims and a diplomat specialized in consular affairs.
It will return to Belem in Brazil's State of Para, the embassy said.
Brazilian diplomats had said earlier that it was not possible to increase the number of passengers onboard.
The plane was the second aircraft that Brazil has sent to the neighboring Suriname to pick up its nationals since Dec. 24, when about 200 foreigners, including Brazilians and Chinese, were attacked by Surinamese maroons, as descendants of local slaves are called, in Albina, 150 km away from Paramaribo.
The riot broke out after a local man was stabbed to death, allegedly by a Brazilian, provoking the townspeople to take revenge against the Brazilians.
