St. George, December 23, 2009 -- A thirty-four year old relationship with Japan has yielded yet another major fisheries project for Grenada.
This time around, the fishing village of Gouyave is about to become the recipient of a US$30 million grant project which will see its vital fishing industry benefit from a new fisheries complex, expanded berthing facilities and a modern, long-range communications system at Grand Etang.
Japan's Ambassador to Caricom, Tatsuaki Iawata, and Grenada's Foreign Affairs minister, Peter David, penned an agreement and exchanged notes here on Tuesday to seal the deal on this project which is scheduled to begin within the first half of 2010, and which should be completed within eighteen months.
Japan has consistently provided support for Grenada's fishing industry, including the Melville Street fisheries project and another at Grenville.
In an exchange of pleasantries, Ambassador expressed his appreciation for Grenada's support for Japan in the international arena; while Agriculture minister, Michael Lett applauded Japan's support for the local fishing industry and human resource development.
