String Of Northampton Fires Claims Two Lives

Paul Curtis woke up shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday to see his neighbor's house in flames.

Curtis, whose neighborhood has been beset by small arson fires involving automobiles and leaves for months, looked out the window and saw the fire on the screened front porch of the house next door. This latest blaze would turn fatal.

The fire spread so quickly that firefighters were not able to enter the house when they arrived. Two occupants died.

And it wasn't the only fire set that morning. Three other houses were hit, and several cars — at least eight fires, all within a half-mile radius and not far from the commercial center of the college town.

As Gov. Deval Patrick and fire and police officials announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the arsonist or arsonists, people living in Ward 3 not far from the town's vibrant center were wondering when they'd get a good night's sleep again.
