Kamla, Ramesh file nomination papers

In Trinidad and Tobago……..

Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Tabaquite MP Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj are taking no chances when it comes to their respective bids for the post of political leader of the United National Congress, submitting their nomination papers yesterday.

Tomorrow is nomination day. The party’s internal election will take place on January 24, two weeks from today, at which 18 executive positions will be contested.

Since the birth of the UNC 20 years ago, yesterday marked the first time anyone has ever submitted nomination papers to challenge current Political Leader Basdeo Panday as head of the party he formed.

Chairman of the party’s membership committee Kelvin Ramnath confirmed both Persad-Bissessar and Maharaj had filed their papers, explaining it is not unusual for this to happen and that tomorrow, the papers will be filed and stamped.

Each nomination must be supported by consent of 36 financial members of the UNC.
