Consistency is the key to success for Windies

The TCL Group West Indies Under-19s will need to be more consistent in all departments if they are to challenge for the title at the upcoming ICC Under-19 World Cup, in New Zealand.

Speaking on Monday, captain Andre Creary said the players have all made the mental and physical adjustment to the conditions in New Zealand, but they now needed to be “play consistent cricket for the duration of all matches”.

Creary, a right-handed allrounder from Jamaica, made his observation following the Windies defeat to Australia in their first official warm-up match.

They have another warm-up on Tuesday (Monday evening Caribbean Time) against Ireland in Christchurch, but the start looked set to be delayed due to bad weather.

In that match, at the Lincoln Oval Number 3, near Christchurch, the Aussie won the toss, batted first and made an impressive 319-7 off their 50 overs.

The Windies then batted well to reach 263-9 off 43.4 overs before bad light brought an end to the match. The Australians were declared winners by 41 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis Method.

In the batting Yannic Cariah topscored with 65 off just 56 balls with five fours and two sixes, while the attacking Evin Lewis cracked 41 from 40 balls with four boundaries and two sixes. At the bottom of the order, allrounder Jason Holder hit out boldly to make 34.
