UNITED STATES PROVIDES TRAINING TO GRENADA’S FIRE FIGHTERS

Fire in St. George's St. George, January 6, 2010 -- Over 60 firefighters and forest rangers from Grenada and St. Vincent will benefit from an intensive Wildland Bush Fire Prevention and Management workshop currently taking place at the Special Services Unit (SSU) Camp, Point Salines.

The workshop, sponsored by the U.S. Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is a collaborative effort between the Caribbean Open Trade Support program (USAID-COTS) and the Fire Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force. 

The facilitators are former U.S. Forest Service Fire Management Official, Don Kandarian and retired Fire Battalion Chief Susan McCourt.

Between January 4 and 15, workshop participants will be exposed to such diverse topics as: topographic influences and fuel; bush fire safety and preparedness; risk management; incident command systems and bush fire prevention strategies. They will also participate in practical exercises.

At the brief opening ceremony for the first workshop on Monday January 4th, brief remarks were delivered by ACP Dowlyn Bartholomew on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Second-in-Charge of the Fire Department Inspector Corian, and Tyrone Buckmire, the USAID-COTS National Coordinator for Grenada.

They all urged the participants to take full advantage of the opportunity offered by, and the wealth of knowledge possessed by, the resource persons.
