Steve Gorrie first court appearance ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Friday May 7, 2010 – Four days after delivering two severed heads to Grenadian police, a 32-year-old man appeared in court to face not only two murder charges, but verbal attacks from outraged citizens.

Scores of Grenadians converged outside the Grenville Magistrate Court, in the same community where the murders took place, to see machine operator Steve Gorrie on his first court appearance yesterday.

As he was escorted to the courtroom under heavy police guard, many of the onlookers hurled insults and screamed at the man accused of murdering former police officer Clyde Greenidge, who was a farmer when he met his gruesome end; and farm aide, Christopher Stafford.

But among the angry crowd, stood a few who expressed sympathy for the families of the victims.

Gorrie allegedly beheaded Greenidge and Stafford on Monday, before taking their heads, in a bucket, to a police station.

Lawmen immediately took him into custody and the bodies of Greenidge and Stafford were later discovered on Greenidge’s farm.

Gorrie is scheduled to return to court on May 28th.

When he made his first appearance, he was not represented by a lawyer.

Prime Minister Tillman Thomas described the latest killings – which brought to five the number of murders in the country for the year – as “a very sad period for Grenada”.
