British think-tank calls for softer immigration policy

BBC Caribbean News in Brief

The Institute for Public Policy Research, a left-leaning think tank based in London, has said that they would like to see the new government revise their current approach to immigration, to make it less stringent.

It is calling for a softer stance on lower skilled workers following a study it conducted, which cited the major economic benefits of those migrants' remittances for their home countries.

There has been a big debate on the issue in Britain with many people calling for even tighter regulations on immigration.

The last Labour government introduced a points-based system which favoured highly skilled migrants.

A new Conservative-led coalition government has promised to take an even stricter stance and impose a cap on the number of migrants allowed into the country.

However, the institute says these tough policies harm developing countries which benefit substantially from remittances.
