Major crimes down in June

The Police High Command is reporting that there was a major reduction in major crimes such as murders and shootings in the month of June.

According to the police the number of rapes, robberies, break-ins and larceny also declined when compared with June of last year.
Police figures show that there were 758 major crimes last month compared to 964 in the similar period last year.

The reductions occurred in the usual crime hot spots in the Kingston Western; St. Andrew North; St. Catherine North; St. Catherine South; St. James and Clarendon police divisions.

According to the high command the number of murders dropped from 121 in June 2009 to 91 this year. This represents an overall 24 decrease over last year or 87 fewer cases than May of this year.
Meanwhile, the police high command says the number of shooting incidents recorded the most dramatic percentage decline.

It has moved from 140 incidents in June 2009 to 92 in June 2010, a difference of 48 incidents or 34 per cent. However despite the reductions in shootings, cases of rape and larceny increased in June in comparison to May.
