Three people killed after car collides with lamppost in Darwen

Three people were killed when a car collided with a lamppost in Darwen, Lancashire on Saturday afternoon.

The Peugeot hatchback was outside the Ocean Palace Restaurant on the A666 when it left the road and smashed into the post.

Emergency services soon arrived at the crash site, but had to declare one person dead at the scene.

Two more victims were rushed to Royal Blackburn Hospital, but later died.

A fourth person involved in the accident is critically ill and undergoing surgery.

Inspector Damian Kitchen, of Lancashire Constabulary's Road Policing Unit, said: 'We are in the process of identifying the people involved and informing relatives.

'This is an extremely tragic incident which will impact on a number of families and we will be doing everything possible to support them at this time.'

He added that an enquiry team had been set up and called for any witnesses to the crash to contact police
