Grenada taking “national development’’ issues to Copenhagen conference

St. George’s, December 3, 2009 (GIS) – Grenada will be looking to this month’s climate change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, to seek support for certain specific local projects.

The Grenada contingent to the conference will be headed by Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas and will include Minister for the Environment, Hon. Michael Church.

Prime Minister Thomas, who will also be leading the delegation of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), said Grenada will seek assistance for things such as the protection of our coastline, and the preservation of Grand Anse Beach.

“There is a project for preserving Granada Anse which was on the scene for some time,’’ Mr. Thomas told journalists Wednesday. “There’ll be other projects in coastline-type activities, reforestation and in areas where the rise in temperature is affecting small-island states. These are the some of the projects that the technical people will be presenting to get funding for.’’

The Grenada delegation is heading to Denmark “on serious national business,’’ Environment Minister Church added.

“We need to go out and seek funding to support our national development,’’ he said.

Some members of the Grenada delegation have already left the country to engage in negotiations on behalf of AOSIS.

“Grenada is in the chair of AOSIS, so Grenada has to provide the secretarial support and the leadership,’’ Prime Minister Thomas explained. “It is not a Grenada delegation as such; it is an AOSIS delegation and this won’t cost government anything. We must get this clear.’’

Hon. Thomas said money is raised by the Alliance of Small Island States, and it’s specifically designated “for AOSIS and its activities. Those funds could only be used for AOSIS activities
